Why do bedbugs bite in the same place?

Three red spots on your forearm. You noticed them this morning when you got out of the shower. Your first thought may have been mosquitoes, but then you Googled them. And here you are, wondering if these bites in the same place are really what you're afraid of.

Things to remember

  • We scientifically explain the phenomenon of aligned bites (the breakfast, lunch and dinner concept) to remove any doubt about the extent of the infestation.

  • This article brings the reassuring expertise of a Brussels-based professional to help you move from skin diagnosis to immediate relief.

  • Visual comparison

  • Compare the different options before deciding.

Let's be honest: in 9 out of 10 cases, when a Brussels customer calls us with this description, it's a bedbug that's responsible. This pattern of aligned bites even has a nickname in the trade: «breakfast, lunch, dinner». The bedbug feeds, moves a few millimeters, bites again and moves on. The result: a line of red pimples that looks like nothing else.

This article will help you to make a clear visual diagnosis, to understand what these multiple stings reveal about the extent of the problem, and above all to know what to actually do before calling us or buying anything at the pharmacy.

Onion row prickles vs. isolated buds: a visual comparison

The first thing to know is that bedbug bites are not like those of other insects. Well, not exactly. A mosquito bites once, in one place, then flies off. The bite swells quickly, forms a whitish bump, and itches immediately. A bedbug, on the other hand, has an entirely different modus operandi.

Bedbug bites in the same place: guide and solutions

The bedbug crawls on your skin while you sleep. It looks for an accessible blood vessel, plants its proboscis, feeds for 5 to 10 minutes, then shifts slightly to bite again. It's this behavior that produces those famous aligned stings, often in groups of three to five, spaced a few centimetres apart in the same area. Arm, shoulder, neck, back: every part of the body exposed outside the comforter is stung.

Visually, red bedbug spots are flat in the center with a slight bulge around them. They don't blister like a spider bite, and they don't have the small black spot in the center that you see with a flea. The color is a frank red, sometimes pinkish, and the area around may be slightly swollen. Nocturnal itching often appears with a time lag: you don't feel anything during the night (the bedbug's saliva contains an anesthetic), but in the morning, it's itchy.

To recognize bites reliably, ask yourself these questions. Did the pimples appear after a night's sleep? Are they grouped together or arranged in a line? Are they on areas of skin that were uncovered during the night? If you answer yes to all three, the visual diagnosis leans heavily towards bedbugs.

A detail that also helps: the skin reaction varies enormously from one person to another. Some people hardly react at all, while others develop impressive patches. That's why bed bugs can bite only one person in a couple. It's not that they «prefer» someone: it's that the other person shows no visible signs of being bitten, even if he or she is bitten too. We regularly see couples in Brussels where one is covered in pimples and the other has nothing. This doesn't mean that the problem is any smaller.

An isolated pimple, on the other hand, is more ambiguous. It could be a mosquito, an allergic reaction or an ingrown hair. It's really the line or cluster pattern that should alert you. If you see three red pimples lined up on your arm and you haven't slept with the window open in the middle of summer, look no further.

Several bites: is this the sign of a single bedbug or a nest?

Five injections on waking. Then eight the next night. The question that's always asked: «Are there a lot of them in my house? The answer isn't as straightforward as we'd like, but we can give you some concrete pointers.

A single bedbug can inflict between three and five bites in a single night. It feeds around once a week, sometimes more often if conditions are favorable. So if you notice several bites in a single night, it doesn't necessarily mean you have a nest of fifty individuals under the mattress. A single bedbug is enough to produce that characteristic line of pimples.

The real indicator of bedbug numbers is frequency. If you wake up with multiple new bites every night, or every other night, you're probably dealing with an established infestation with several active individuals. The insect's behavior is predictable: during the day, it hides in the seams of mattresses, cracks in box springs and behind baseboards, and comes out at night, attracted by the CO2 you exhale and the warmth of your body.

An important point about the reproductive cycle. A female lays between 2 and 5 eggs a day, up to 500 in her lifetime. Eggs hatch in 10 to 14 days. This means that a single bedbug that arrives in your suitcase after a trip can, within three weeks, have generated a colony. It's mathematical, and that's why we always insist on rapid intervention.

Where do bedbugs most often bite? On areas accessible during sleep. Arms, legs, neck, face, shoulders. Rarely the back if you sleep on your back (the skin is against the mattress), but frequently if you sleep on your stomach. Bedbugs do not penetrate clothing: they seek out bare skin. If you sleep in long pyjamas, bites will be concentrated on the hands, neck and face.

To assess the extent of the infestation right away, check for physical signs. Turn your mattress over: small black spots (their droppings) or reddish marks (dried blood) on the seams are a strong signal. Also look at the corners of the box spring and the back of the headboard. If you find live individuals, translucent molts or tiny white eggs (1 mm, shaped like a grain of rice), the infestation is confirmed and probably already at an advanced stage.

But don't panic. An infestation detected early, even with several bedbugs, can be effectively treated. It's when you wait for weeks, hoping «it'll go away», that the situation becomes really complicated. Bedbugs never go away on their own. They never do.

Our pre-purchase recommendations: remedies and home preparation

You've identified the bites and you're pretty sure they're bedbugs. Before you empty your pharmacy account or order three insecticide bombs from the Internet, read on. It may save you from wasting money and, worse, making the problem worse.

To relieve itching immediately, a hydrocortisone-based soothing cream (over-the-counter) does the job. Apply it twice a day to pimples, without scratching. Scratching is the trap: it causes superinfections, and then you go from an insect problem to a dermatological one. If the itching is really intense, an oral antihistamine (such as cetirizine) calms the allergic reaction. No further treatment is needed for the bites themselves: they heal on their own in one or two weeks.

What you really mustn't do: buy insecticide sprays from a supermarket and spray your mattress. These products are ineffective against bedbugs (they've been largely resistant to them for years) and they disperse the colony. The bugs flee the product, migrate to other rooms, and you turn a localized problem into a generalized infestation. We see this regularly with our customers in Brussels: they've treated themselves for three weeks, and when they call us, the bedbugs have colonized the living room and the children's bedroom.

Here's what you can do while you're waiting for an expert. Wash all your bedding - sheets, covers, pillowcases - at 60°C minimum. Put everything in the tumble-dryer for 30 minutes at high heat: it's the heat that kills bedbugs and their eggs, not the washing itself. Thoroughly vacuum the mattress, box spring and skirting boards around the bed, and dispose of the vacuum bag in a closed garbage bag outside your home.

To prepare for disinsectisation, move furniture away from walls by about 10 cm. Empty bedside tables. Remove picture frames hanging near the bed. These gestures facilitate the technician's access to treatment areas and considerably improve the efficiency of the intervention. A well-prepared home is sometimes the difference between a two-pass treatment and a four-pass treatment.

A word about the «natural remedies» you see everywhere online. Diatomaceous earth works as a supplement, yes, but it's not enough on its own to eliminate an infestation. Lavender or tea tree essential oils may repel bedbugs temporarily, but they don't kill them. What about homemade CO2 traps made with yeast and sugar? We've never seen a case where that solved anything.

What works is a professional treatment combining heat and/or targeted insecticide, applied by someone who knows the insect's behavior and where to look. In Brussels, we generally apply the treatment in two passes, spaced 15 days apart to cover the entire reproductive cycle. The first pass eliminates adults and nymphs, while the second catches individuals from eggs that have not yet hatched.

If you're still hesitating between «wait and see» and «call a professional», here's a simple criterion. Stung two nights in a row or more? Give us a call. The cost of an early insect removal in Brussels is much lower than that of an infestation that has had time to settle throughout the apartment.

Conclusion

Bedbug bites in the same place, lined up in onion rows, is the most recognizable sign of an infestation. A single bedbug may be responsible, but the problem won't go away on its own. Soothe the itch with a soothing cream, prepare your home properly, and call in an expert rather than trying treatments that may make the situation worse.

You're in Brussels and recognize what you've just read? Contact us for a rapid diagnosis. We always prefer to intervene early, when the problem is still manageable, rather than recovering an infestation that has had weeks to spread.

Frequently asked questions

Can a bedbug bite several times in a single night?

Bed bugs can bite a person's body dozens of times in a single night, in order to feed. They are generally found on parts of the body uncovered at night (face, hands, arms, legs).

Where do bedbugs bite most often?

Bed bugs generally bite the most exposed and accessible parts of your body. Since they often come from underneath (mattresses, bedding, beds, furniture, linen, etc.), the parts of your body most likely to be bitten are your back, arms, legs and neck.

How do you know if you've been bitten by a bedbug?

Bedbug bites cause skin lesions in the form of raised red spots (maculopapules), from 5 mm to 2 cm in size, with a hemorrhagic red spot or a vesicle of clear liquid at their center. These papules cause itching (pruritus), which is more pronounced in the morning than in the evening.

Can bedbugs bite only one person?

Bed bugs may bite only one person sharing a room. They rarely bite pets. If not exterminated, bed bugs reproduce and spread rapidly.
